How to report fraud and scams
Before reporting fraud and scams, it's crucial to understand what they entail and what they don't, enabling you to recognize if you've fallen victim to one.
What is a fraud?
Fraud refers to the deliberate act of deceiving or tricking someone to gain unauthorized access to their bank or personal details. These details are then used to carry out transactions from your account without your knowledge or consent. It can take various forms, such as identity theft, credit card fraud, or online scams. In essence, fraud involves unauthorized transactions that you do not recognize or authorize, resulting in financial loss and potential harm to your personal information and security.
What is a scam?
A scam occurs when you are manipulated or deceived into making a payment to a scammer, who then unlawfully acquires and misappropriates the funds. Scammers often impersonate individuals or organizations you trust, utilizing emails, phone calls, and text messages that appear authentic. These deceptive tactics aim to elicit your trust and coax you into divulging sensitive information or transferring money. Scams can take various forms, including call-forwarding scams, fake job scams, impersonation scams, and safe account scams. Ultimately, falling victim to a scam can result in financial loss and pose risks to your personal and financial security.
